To the Store Clerk That Made Me Absolutely Speechless – I Salute You
This occurred on a Sunday morning, and I felt in a foul mood, filling up the family car. The location was one of those petrol stations that also functions as a supermarket, so you run the risk of joining a queue customers carrying goods of slightly overpriced groceries. A terrible fate to unfold when all you want is to pay for some fuel. Awful.
I was fourth in the waiting line. A single person serving, a female attendant. There was something unusual to her presence. After the ditherer at the first position had completed payment for his purchases, a baked snack, and a carton of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier bid him an excellent day. Odd. Could be I misunderstood, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. The thought crossed my mind if perhaps she was a supporter in my battle with dithering, reflecting my irritation for those who delay simple fuel-buyers such as myself.
Taking a step forward, now third in line. The new leader of our group finished pumping gas with impressive quickness. Once more it happened: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? At this location? Her tone suggested it, and few locals wishes anyone a wonderful day, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find US citizens visiting this town, least of all working in petrol stations or elsewhere.
Now I stood second. Following a senior shopper dealing with a lengthy struggle with her basket, her groceries, her handbag and her rewards card. The process dragged on. After she finished, the woman also received the wish a wonderful day. Clearly an American. Confirming it was possible by cracking a joke to her, to observe that response when they look at you, unsmilingly, and reply with genuine earnest: “That’s really funny.” But I couldn’t think of a funny comment to say.
In the end, I embraced the heartfelt tone – or a performance of it, that equates to no different – with which she looked me right in the eye, piercingly, and wished me an awesome day. My spirits lifted. Beneficial indeed.
