Just as bad weather swept through the northwest the night before, Manchester City blew United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil win for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their title credentials as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Setbacks for Manchester United

This outcome represented back-to-back Women's Super League losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s capability to juggle league and continental football with a thin roster has been a frequently analyzed topic since they qualified for the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Ex- City player Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to overcome any opponent who finished above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding standing after nine games.
