Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he got the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic horror movies, also exists.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
