New York Unveils Portal for Citizens to Submit ICE Images Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has rolled out a new reporting form urging residents to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This step comes just a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking mass demonstrations.
US Citizens Held In Enforcement Action
A US congressman disclosed during a news conference that four American citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in New York on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG declared in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and recorded immigration enforcement yesterday, I ask you to share that evidence with the authorities. We are committed to assessing these reports and evaluating any violations of law."
Portal Features
The platform includes options to upload images and video footage of the incident, along with a field to note geographic details. When submitting, users must check a checkbox that states that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, such as in a court case or government document."
Information about the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say featured dozens of government officers, happened in a well-known neighborhood of NYC where counterfeit purses, items, goods and additional items are regularly available widely – typically to sightseers.
Footage of the operation show multiple covered and weaponized personnel securing and holding a person, and pushing back witnesses. Masses of New Yorkers followed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored truck was also seen rolling through the urban roads.
Official Reactions
At a news conference held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He said the persons were released on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he said. "This is a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is purely a justification to incite violence for the government to utilize the armed forces to halt conflict that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the operation, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the current administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, rather than security. It needs to cease," a contender declared.
The city's advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.
"Immigration agents raided Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and riot gear to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This action had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the leader of a advocacy group.
Agency Rules
Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has stated it refrains from take into custody US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in the state and around the country recently.
An October operation in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the current administration. Protests targeting immigration enforcement are widespread including allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document submitted by advocacy organizations alleged inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
