Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
