The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
