Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
