In Such Poor Health I Couldn’t Walk When a Man Virtually Carried Me to a Restroom.

Back when I was nineteenth year, my daily commute was on an express bus. The vehicle was always jammed and would always be completely full when I boarded.

On one specific day, I started experiencing quite nauseous when the coach lurched around every turn. I repeatedly told myself to hold on just a little longer so the bus could reached where I needed to get off, at which point I could make a mad dash for the nearest public restroom to be sick.

As we neared the road leading to the stop when it dawned on me I wasn’t going to make it. Suddenly, it was like a curtain fell over me. My vision turned white and really quiet; as if someone cut the sound. I said to myself, “I will lose consciousness”.

Luckily I was toward the front of the bus, so I managed a few steps forward and told the operator to pull over, informing him I needed to be sick. He promptly opened the entrance and I weakly exited onto the sidewalk.

I was resolved to not get sick before a busy multi-lane road, so I forced myself up and endeavored to stumble toward the green space across the road, where I thought I could at least find some privacy near some foliage to throw up. Yet I must have fainted. I sensed my limbs, but I was unable to walk or see properly, so I started crawling towards my intended destination.

“Everything alright, love?”

In that instant, I was lifted up. I felt a strong arm supporting me and heard a man say, “Are you okay, dear?” I explained to this kind passerby that I required to be sick. Thus, he practically helped me walk into a close-by structure and put me in the ladies’ toilets. He asked me if I needed him to stay with me but I refused.

A few minutes later, I had recovered enough to sit on the toilet and from outside the door came him inquire, “Are you OK, love? Do you need anything?” I could not to stand up just then but I was able to say thank you and following a brief period recovered the use of my limbs. I made my way home and then spent the next few days recovering from what was later diagnosed as a nasty tummy bug.

I never glimpsed his features – only his legs along with a sizable metal toolbox he held – yet he rescued me, when I was in my weakest state.

Many times, life can make you guarded, hostile, and combative. His act was the type of kindness that undoes that emotional callousness. He demonstrated that humanity’s innate tendency is towards kindness, a quality I adore in other people.
