Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
An recent term emerged a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that violations are ongoing. Officials disputes these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is accused of. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what unity resembles.
The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision turns 70 next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed harmony has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
