The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
