Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The clip, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who previously worked in military or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this constitution," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are clear, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that violate the legal system or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a furious reaction from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he declared: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a unified statement censuring the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our country with great loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme online messages and withdraw his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Reaction
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this country and swore an pledge to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it punishable by execution for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "Every American must come together and denounce the president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress instructing troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and determine all that."
Administration Response
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the official declared. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
