"We had so many unbelievable talents," recalls former City teammate Ben Knight. "When you've got that many top, top players, you get the sense like you're never going to lose."

"Receiving a City education and then putting your own spin on it and being able to play with creative license has certainly helped Cole," continued Knight. "Cole was the type of player that needed a degree of liberty to be at his most effective... At Chelsea as the focal point; he can go where he wants and get on the ball and express himself. It's worked out."

The primary aim at Manchester City's academy is clear: to produce players for the club's elite team. To enable this, a distinct stylistic and tactical structure is implemented, mirroring the principles of Pep Guardiola's side to ensure a seamless transition. The learning process frequently includes emulation of the existing superstars. "I attempted to copy Bernardo Silva, McAtee tried to copy David Silva," Knight explained. "The greatest challenge is they're multi-million pound players and you're trying to take their position—that is incredibly difficult. It's almost next to impossible."

Palmer's own path almost concluded early at City, with certain at the club questioning whether the slight 16-year-old possessed the required qualities. "He had like a significant growth spurt," Knight recalled. "And then Covid happened and he trained with the first team and it was like: 'Oh my God, how good is he now? He's just ridiculous.'"

Smart recruitment and superb coaching ensure to maintain City's position at the forefront and make them the envy of competitors.
