California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is facing dryness. This landmark event arrives after challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and challenged its enormous farming industry.

An Update Reveals An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program illustrated that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes exceeding their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and fatalities. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were considered unusually parched. Heavy rains at the beginning of January finally erased those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

Yet, hydrologists note that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Current readings of the high-elevation snow place it at roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which accounts for about a third of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for future water availability. Hydrology managers point out that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, attention turns to sustaining this positive water situation throughout the months to come.
