British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
