As Swimmers Escaped Attack, Popular Image Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many others in the area, detected cracking sounds echoing through the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the street, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the path that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He’s running into something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just totally maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams caring for numerous the injured.

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many permanent beach safety officers, said that the team performed exceptionally from the moment the incident began right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a council representative.
