Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
